How do you teach art history to children 2.5-6?

Each month we introduce an artist to the children. Our artist is chosen based on what we are learning that month or an interest we are seeing from the children.

In October we highlighted Ms. Yayoi Kusama, a contemporary artist who lives in Japan. The children were amazed that she is, “on Earth right now!” We practiced an act of peace education by first learning how to correctly pronounce her name. The children took great pride in this time. We read books about her life and work. We studied pictures of her art and noticed her love for circles and pumpkins. We concluded our study of Yayoi by making clay pumpkins and then painting them.

The children had various works in the classroom this month to practice the skills needed to make the final product out of clay. In this study we learned, we can be artists just like Yayoi! These works are based on art but are built on the Montessori philosophies of practical life, which is increasing motor control, strength, concentration, and independence.
